Just had a conversation about this recently with someone, though I hadn't seen the map. I always called them "soft drinks" and after moving back to California had to make myself use the word "soda" because it sounded so weird. I'm afraid I could never say "pop."
Love watching the linguistic patterns across the country. Just read that if Sarah Palin sounds a lot like someone from the movie Fargo, it's because the area of Alaska she grew up in was settled by immigrants from Minnesota.
